How We Compare Smart Home Products

HomeTechTested exists to answer one question: "Which smart home device should I actually buy?" Here's how we figure that out.

What "Tested" means on this site

Our name reflects our approach: we test claims, not just list features. We verify what manufacturers say against real-world owner experiences, community reports, and available data. For products we physically own, we provide hands-on impressions with photos and setup notes. For everything else, we're transparent about our methodology.

Our content types

Hands-on reviews

Products we own and have set up in a real home. These include our own photos, app screenshots, setup experiences, and long-term observations. Clearly labeled.

Research-based comparisons

Our "Best X" and comparison articles are built from:

We don't pretend to have every robot vacuum in our living room. We do thoroughly research each one before recommending it.

Total Cost of Ownership content

One of our key differentiators. We calculate the real cost of owning a device over 3-5 years, including subscriptions, replacement parts, batteries, and ecosystem lock-in. These numbers are verified against current pricing pages.

Reddit Consensus articles

We aggregate real owner opinions from r/homeautomation, r/homeassistant, r/smarthome and other communities. We read hundreds of posts and comments to identify what actual long-term users think. Sources are always referenced.

Pricing verification

All prices are verified at time of writing and noted with a "Pricing verified: [Month] 2026" badge where applicable. Smart home pricing changes frequently (especially subscriptions), so we aim to update pricing content monthly.
