Switching Ecosystems: What I Learned Moving From Google Home to Home Assistant (2026)
I ran Google Home for three years. It worked fine for basic stuff: “Hey Google, turn off the lights” and “Hey Google, set the thermostat to 22.” But when I wanted my lights to dim automatically when I started a movie, or my thermostat to adjust based on which rooms were occupied, Google Home hit a wall. What Went Wrong
Nest thermostats were painful. The Nest integration with Home Assistant requires a Google Cloud project setup. It took me three hours of configuration, OAuth tokens, and YAML editing. The thermostat works in Home Assistant now, but the migration was frustrating.
Nest cameras barely work. Nest cameras have limited functionality in Home Assistant. Live view works, but motion detection and recording are unreliable. I ended up replacing my Nest cameras with Reolink PoE cameras recording to a local NVR. This was an unexpected expense ($330 for 6 cameras).

What I Would Do Differently
Start with Home Assistant from the beginning. If I were starting a smart home today, I would go straight to Home Assistant. The migration cost and effort would have been zero.
Replace Nest cameras immediately. Trying to integrate Nest cameras into Home Assistant was wasted time. Should have replaced them with Reolink PoE cameras from day one.
Use Matter devices where possible. Matter did not exist when I started. If I were migrating today, I would choose Matter devices (locks, thermostats, lights) that work natively with Home Assistant and also with Google Home as a fallback.
Keep Google Home for voice only. I tried to remove Google Home entirely, but my family preferred Google Assistant for music, timers, and general questions. The compromise: Google Home handles voice and music, Home Assistant handles everything else. They coexist peacefully.
Document everything. I did not document my automations and entity names consistently. Six months later, I spend too much time figuring out what I did. Name entities clearly and document your automations.
The Verdict
Switching from Google Home to Home Assistant was worth it, but it was not painless. The automation power, local control, and privacy benefits are real. The migration effort and learning curve are also real.
